A1 – HGV Overtaking Ban

Members may be aware of an experimental ban on overtaking on the M42 that was in place last year.

As we feared the idea is spreading, and we have been advised that the Highways Agency is considering a further “trial” on the A1 in the North East. The stretches of road affected are between junction 63 and 62 and between junctions 61 and 60. Our view is that these bans achieve nothing. The delay overtaking, so that frustration which might have been felt by private car and light van drivers that are held up by lorries is made much worse when they can overtake. Please notify any drivers using the A1 (M) in the north-east to be aware of the restrictions if and when they come into force.
