Vehicle Safety Seminar

Coleg Menai was the sponsor for the second major get-together of local public service and heavy goods vehicle operators this week.

The delegates came to hear presentations by experts in the field of vehicle fleet operation. The evening was organised by Bob Singleton, the college's course leader of the Certificate in Professional Competence (CPC) - the mandatory qualification for operators.

David Collings of VOSA (the government's Vehicle and Operator Service Agency). Updated attendees on the agency's priorities and the introduction of IT led targeted enforcement to reduce the number of illegal trucks on the roads. David stressed the need for the industry and VOSA to work together to ensure that the UK roads are a safer place for all users.

Edna Gill, Area Manager for the Road Haulage Association gave a presentation on the new digital tachograph. Edna highlighted the implications for both small and large operators and the need for operators to be prepared by acquiring the necessary cards and training.

Tim Culpin, partner of Chester based law firm Aaron and Partners, spoke on the effects of the Road Transport Regulations since their introduction last year. Tim highlighted that whilst this had been heralded as a difficulty for operators the practise has proven that it has been possible for operators to adapt to the new regulations and operate legally.

David Alcock, managing director of Green Hire Limited said afterwards, "This was a very useful local event that helps us keep up to date. It provided an opportunity for us to meet both enforcers and advisers in an informal atmosphere. We are grateful to the College for organising this and look forward to similar events in the future."
