Costs and their proper influence on haulage rates are seen as one of the most crucial aspects of managing a transport business – and actually making a profit!

A unique feature of the RHA Cost Tables is that they lead you to apply your costs on a three-dimensional basis:

A cost of the amount of time it will take you to do the job for which you are quoting, including all time-related costs.

A cost of covering the miles involved in completing the job, covering all distance-related costs such as fuel, tyres, repairs and maintenance.Costs which are specific to that journey, such as subsistence, tolls, ferry charges etc.

When using the tables it is essential to remember that the figures are only averages, derived from the annual RHA member survey.

As it says many times within the tables, "these are not YOUR costs" (at least they probably aren't!).

So it's vital that you don't just look at the page for (say) a 7.5 tonne gross weight vehicle and assume that all the figures in that page will automatically apply to your vehicle.

It is a feature of the RHA Cost Tables that each page of costs includes a column in which you can place your estimate of YOUR costs alongside those given, for purposes of comparison. The explanatory notes at the beginning tell you how to do this.

  • Free for Members
  • Realistic Costings
  • Helps you calculate your own costs
  • Work out your Profit

You will find that the three elements above "mix" in infinitely varying proportions with different jobs.

They must therefore be separately calculated, added together and then reviewed to see what profit you can add when quoting a rate, whilst keeping an eye on remaining competitive in the market place.

There are many other invaluable sections you'll find it useful to look at when accessing the RHA Cost Tables 2008.

They are all relevant to your problems of managing for profit and include sections on:

  • Calculating rates and charges
  • Annual RHA surveys of costs
  • Index of costs over ten years
  • Start-up cash requirements
  • Haulage cost indices compared with rates and RPI over ten years
