RHA welcomes UK move on foreign hauliers

The RHA has welcomed news that the UK domestic haulage market will remain closed to trucks from most of Eastern Europe for another year.

There were fears that trucks from five countries – Czech Republic, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and Slovakia – would have access to the UK market from May 1. But the government has told the European Commission it is closing the door until May 1 2009, when EU law gives mandatory access to those countries, as well as to Poland and Hungary.

"We had strong indications from members that some of these trucks would be taking work and jobs away from UK hauliers and this decision should put a brake on that,” said RHA chief executive Roger King.

“However, we have to be are that the UK market will be open to these Eastern European trucks from May 1 2009, even though they continue to enjoy much lower operating costs because of low wages and fuel duty rates that are half that of the UK".
