RHA asks Prime Minister "Why handicap the UK?"

Today, the prime minister addressing business leaders set out three objectives:

  • The UK to be first
  • The achievement of excellence
  • To lead the world

“Admirable sentiments” said RHA Chief Executive Roger King,  “but he said this on the day his government increased fuel duty by 2ppl.  That means:

  • We are first in a list of EU countries in high fuel prices
  • This will make excellence harder to achieve as transport costs rise
  • We certainly lead the world in hitting road transport where it hurts – fuel bills

"Of course if you are a foreign haulier operating in the UK this is great news.  Fuelled with cheap continental fuel, accessing our roads for nothing perhaps this is the competitiveness the prime minister is referring to?  In our declaration delivered to the chancellor last Friday we asked for this 2ppl plus next April’s 2ppl plus next March’s 1.8ppl duty increase to be rebated to UK hauliers.

"That would be a start in meeting the prime ministers objectives.  Why hand it all to our competitors?”
